A Message from Our Exalted Ruler, Nathan Belo:

Greetings fellow Elks!

On May 27th, we completed our first in-person lodge meeting since February of 2020 at Ballard Elks #827. At that lodge meeting, a motion was passed to continue meeting at Ballard #827 until renovation of our own lodge is complete, and we reopen this Fall. The Ballard Lodge lost their downstairs tenant due to COVID-19, and have taken over the ground floor, calling it the “Secret Beach Bar.” I encourage you to support this lodge, as well as others, and join us on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month for food and beverages prior to Seattle #92 lodge meetings, which begin at 7:30pm. Ballard Lodge staff are checking membership cards, so don’t leave home without a current one!

This month, the WA State Elks Summer Convention will be held in Pasco, June 16-20. This convention is open to all Elks, and you can find more information about it here: https://waelks.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Annual-Meeting-Registration-Packet-2021.pdf. Seattle #92 is hosting the hospitality room this year, and the theme is 1920’s speakeasy.

Our first coordinated event with Ballard #827 will be a Flag Day ceremony, to be held on Monday, June 14 at 5pm, along with Boy Scout Troop #827! The ceremony will take place in the Ballard Lodge parking lot, located at 6411 Seaview Ave NW, Seattle, WA 98117. I will be participating as Exalted Ruler in the ceremony.

Flag Day, during which we commemorate the anniversary of the adoption of the American Flag, was enacted as Public Law 203 on August 3, 1949 by then President Harry Truman, one of five former presidents that were also members of BPOE. It is a public ceremony open to all. The idea of a Flag Day Service was first suggested to our Order by the Grand Exalted Ruler at the 1907 Grand Lodge Session in Philadelphia, and was first called “Elks Flag Day,” but later became mandatory “Flag Day Services” for all lodges. Elks are the first fraternal organization to celebrate Flag Day, before it became law.

I look forward to seeing all of you at Ballard #827 before and during our lodge meetings, and also hope to see some of you at WA State Elks Summer Convention in Pasco!

Fraternally yours,

Nathan Belo, Exalted Ruler 2021-2022
