A Message from Our Exalted Ruler, Nathan Belo

Dear Seattle Elks,

The 156th Grand Lodge Convention was held July 4-7, 2021 in Tampa Bay, FL, and was the first in 2 years due to COVID. Thank you for sending me as Seattle Elks #92 Exalted Ruler to represent our lodge! 1716 lodges attended with over 7,000 people. 9 resolutions passed in Legislative Session, which included a resolution allowing Lodges to waive initiation and first-year fees for current or former Elks Scholarship recipients. Also in attendance was Seattle Elks #92 Secretary & Auditor to District Deputy of WA State Central District, Jessica Howes, and Jim Howes was installed as District Deputy. T. Keith Mills, Caldwell, ID #1448 was elected and installed as the Grand Exalted Ruler for 2021-2022, and will be visiting our lodge in December. One notable thing Mills mentioned is the 50th Anniversary of the upcoming Hoop Shoot. Seattle #92 has not done a Hoop Shoot since moving from Uptown to North Queen Anne. We are looking for volunteers and locations to hold the Hoop Shoot starting in September. We send a child and their family to Chicago, home of the Elks Grand Lodge, to compete in the final. We saw several Independence Day fireworks from the hotel, and even dodged the brunt of Hurricane Elsa. It was electrifying to watch the Lightning win a Stanley Cup Final outside of Amelie Arena. Seattle has a lot to look forward to when the Seattle Kraken start playing, and we’re excited to have good following watch the games at our renovated lodge. I was a witness to an impromptu wedding between the E.R. of Naval Lodge #353 (Port Angeles) Evan Boyd & Katy Rygaard following the 11th Hour Toast outside of the Florida State Hospitality Suite at the Marriot Water Street, where we stayed. There was a shuttle that went to 4 lodges. I visited Tampa Bay #708 and had their famous Cuban sandwich, St Petersburg #1224, Seminole #2519, and Holiday Isles #1912 at Madeira Beach. August 2 marks the opening of the application period for Most Valuable Student, which closes November 15, 2021 (https://www.elks.org/scholars/scholarships/MVS.cfm). Elks give out 500 4-year scholarships ranging from $1,000-12,500 per year. Since 2003 Seattle has had 12 recipients. Elks membership is not required, but relatives of Elks are eligible for more money for other scholarships. August is WSEA Blood Donation Month, a program that will continue on an annual basis. Make an appointment online (www.schedule.bloodworksnw.org) or call and mention the code “ELKS” drive, so we get credit. A pint of blood saves up to three lives. Please donate, blood levels are extremely low due to the pandemic. Elks Care, Elks Share! Construction is coming along with opening planned for this Fall. The Kitchen equipment has been delivered and interviews for a Food Service Manager are underway. As a reminder, there is only one lodge meeting in August each year, which takes place on the 4th Thursday of the month. I hope to see you at our next lodge meeting, to be held at Ballard #827, August 26th at 7:30pm. Fraternally yours, Nathan Belo
